“Melody of Europe” is a Deutsche Telekom initiative that utilizes artificial intelligence to transform mobile networks data across ten European countries into unique audiovisual experience. This innovative approach demonstrates Deutsche Telekom's technological leadership throughout Europe. Furthermore, music serves as an alternative method for demonstrating connectivity across Europe.

The Makedonski Telekom network plays a vital role in a connected Europe and adds to the symbolic “Melody of Europe”.

An innovative blend of data, AI and music

Deutsche Telekom data experts used billions of mobile telecommunications data points to create an original piece of music. “Melody of Europe” was developed together with the internationally renowned Data Scientist and Researcher Milan Janosov, PhD. “Data is my passion and being part of the journey to translate abstract information into a tangible, emotionally resonant experience was exciting. ‘Melody of Europe’ exemplifies how human expertise and AI capabilities can synergize to produce something unique and meaningful.” – Milan comments.

The art animation was crafted by media artist and composer Hayk Zakoyan. Hayk used visual programming, scripting and sound algorithms to make the Melody of Europe an unforgettable audiovisual experience.

The generative audiovisual art animation picks up spectators with the view of the data flowing across the Europe map, where the landmarks of participating countries emerge in 3D. The animations show famous landmarks of European capital cities such as Athens, Berlin, Bratislava, Budapest, Prague, Skopje, Vienna, Warsaw, Zagreb and Montenegro’s Budva, gradually unfolding to the “Melody of Europe”.

About the creation process of the “Melody of Europe”

Data experts from ten European countries counted mobile network activities like calls, text messages, mobile Internet usage etc. This data was collected across the capital cities of these countries.
All data used was anonymized and the process was fully compliant with GDPR.
This was followed by the transformation of the mobile networks data into sound. Data scientists mapped traffic intensity changes over time into a structured sound pattern, following a simple rule: each data point, representing the total mobile network activity in a given hour, was converted into a musical note, with higher intensities producing higher-pitched sounds.
This initial sound was then processed by an AI composer software. The result was a piece of music that accurately reflects the patterns of the underlying data. With some final brush-up by a sound designer, the Melody of Europe was born.
A generative audiovisual art animation featuring 3D models of capital cities’ landmarks was created to illustrate the Melody of Europe.
